Soiling Loss

Energy lost when dust, pollen, bird droppings, salt or industrial deposits block light from reaching the cells — typically 2–6% annually, but far higher in arid and dusty regions.
What it means
Soiling is the most site-specific loss in a PV plant and one of the few an operator can actively manage. Losses build between rain events and reset partially or fully when it rains, giving a characteristic sawtooth in the soiling ratio. In wet temperate climates annual losses may be 1–2%; across arid regions such as Rajasthan or the Gulf, uncleaned arrays can lose 15–25% during the dry season, and localised industrial or agricultural dust can be worse still. The economic question is never 'how clean can we get it' but 'at what interval does cleaning cost less than the energy it recovers' — a calculation driven by water cost, labour rates, tariff and the local soiling rate measured by dedicated soiling stations.
