EV vs gas cost calculator
Your state's electricity and gas prices decide whether an EV saves you a little or a lot. Pick your state and cars, set how much you charge at home, and see the cost per mile side by side. The federal EV credit ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so fuel savings now carry the case.
Fills in your home electricity rate and gas price. Edit them to match your bill or pump.

How the calculator works
EV cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles divided by 100, times your blended electricity price: home rate for the share you charge at home, public price for the rest. EPA's rating is measured at the wall, so charging losses are already included.
Gas cost per mile is the gas price divided by the car's mpg. Annual cost multiplies each by your miles per year.
EV vs gas: common questions
Is it cheaper to charge an EV than buy gas in 2026?
Usually, if you charge at home. At the EIA US averages of about 18 cents per kWh and $4.27 a gallon, a Model Y at 27.5 kWh/100 mi costs about 5 cents a mile against about 17 cents for a 25.5 mpg gas car. Relying mostly on public fast charging narrows or erases the gap.
How much does it cost to charge an EV per month?
Miles per month times kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times your rate. 1,000 miles in a 27.5 kWh/100 mi EV at 18 cents is about $50.
Does EPA's kWh per 100 miles include charging losses?
Yes. fueleconomy.gov states that its kWh/100 mile estimates for plug-in vehicles include losses during charging, so you do not need to add a separate loss factor.
Is there still a federal tax credit for buying an EV?
No. The IRS says the new and used clean vehicle credits are not allowed for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, and the home charger credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.
