What it means

Cells in a string carry the same current. If one is shaded, it becomes a resistive load dissipating the rest of the string's power as heat — the hot-spot mechanism that can crack glass and start fires. Bypass diodes prevent this: each module typically contains three, one per cell substring, housed in the junction box. When a substring's output collapses, its diode forward-biases and current detours around it, costing roughly a third of that module's output rather than the whole string's. Half-cut cell architectures split modules into two parallel halves, which limits shading losses further. Bypass diodes are also a known failure item — thermal cycling and lightning-induced surges can short them, silently costing a third of a module's production with no visible symptom.
