EV vs gas cost calculator (Canada)
Electricity in Montréal costs under half what it does in Calgary, and pump prices swing by 50 cents a litre across the country. Pick your province and cars to see the real cost per kilometre. Canada's federal EV incentive (EVAP) is open again in 2026, at up to $5,000.
Fills in your home electricity rate and gas price. Edit them to match your bill or pump.

How the calculator works
EV cost per km is the NRCan rating in kWh per 100 km, divided by 100, times your blended electricity price: home rate for the share you charge at home, public price for the rest.
Gas cost per km is the car's L/100 km divided by 100, times the pump price. Annual cost multiplies each by the kilometres you drive.
EV vs gas in Canada: common questions
Is it cheaper to charge an EV than buy gas in Canada?
Yes, by a wide margin when you charge at home. At Toronto's 15.6¢/kWh and September 2026's 183.7¢/L, a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD (17.3 kWh/100 km) costs about 2.7¢/km against about 16¢/km for a Chevrolet Equinox (8.7 L/100 km). Quebec's low electricity price makes the gap widest.
What EV rebate is available in Canada in 2026?
The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program pays up to $5,000 on battery-electric and $2,500 on plug-in hybrid vehicles bought or leased from February 16, 2026, if the final transaction value is $50,000 or less (no cap for Canadian-made vehicles). It drops to $4,000 and $2,000 in 2027. Provincial incentives can stack on top.
How much does it cost to charge an EV per month in Canada?
Kilometres per month times kWh per 100 km, divided by 100, times your rate. 1,700 km a month in a 17.3 kWh/100 km EV at 16¢/kWh is about $47.
Why does my province change the answer so much?
Residential electricity ranged from 8.29¢/kWh in Montréal to 22.90¢/kWh in Calgary in Hydro-Québec's 2025 comparison, and Statistics Canada's September 2026 gasoline prices ran from 162.5¢/L in Edmonton to 213.7¢/L in St. John's.
