Curtailment
Forced reduction of renewable energy output below capability, typically due to oversupply, transmission constraint, or negative pricing.
Curtailment is the involuntary reduction of a renewable generator's output below what it could deliver. Causes: oversupply on the grid, transmission line constraints, negative wholesale prices, frequency response requirements. China, Texas (ERCOT), Germany, and California all see meaningful solar curtailment in 2026 — typically 2–8% of potential output. Curtailment economics drive co-located BESS deployment and grid reinforcement priorities.
