EMS

Also called: Energy Management System

In one line

Software layer above BMS that orchestrates BESS dispatch decisions — when to charge, discharge, and which markets to bid into.

What it means

An Energy Management System (EMS) sits above the BMS in a BESS architecture. It makes dispatch decisions — when to charge, when to discharge, which energy markets and ancillary services to participate in — based on price signals, forecasts, and operational constraints. EMS quality often determines BESS revenue more than the underlying hardware.
